Obama Cancels Saturday Night Live Appearance

As Hurricane Ike hammered the Texas coast Friday night, Senator Barack Obama announced he would not appear on the season premiere of "Saturday Night Live". The Obama campaign released the following statement: In light of the unfolding crisis in Texas, Senator Obama has decided it is no longer appropriate to appear on “Saturday Night Live” tomorrow evening.
I do believe that he did this with every intention of being the right thing, but as of right now he is still and senator and doesn't have to make these decisions. He's acting as if he is already the president. But after going through this I still don't see anything wrong with it. Some people took this a little different then others.

I would agree that it would have been inappropriate to appear on SNL during this crisis. Look what happened to Bush when Katrina hit. He was at some country music concert while thousands were left homeless and many people died. Perhaps it is because Obama genuinely cares, but at this stage in the election process each candidate must be fully conscious of their image. Although appearing on SNL would do great things for Obama, stepping up when people need him adheres more to his campaign. A newsline reading that Obama cancels SNL to honor Ike victims helps him more than one that slams him for ignoring the harsh reality in exchange for a sketch comedy show.

I agree with Jason on this... a lot. Him appearing on SNL as thousands of people struggle for survival amidst a hurricane would have only only hurt his image among independents and swing voters.

On the note from the original poster about him appearing as the president already, that is one of the main functions of the primary/general election stages of our election process. If you don't appear presidential-like, nobody will believe that you're capable of running our country. It's currently the job of our candidates to fake like they're running the country.

I agree with Matt. Obama cancelling his SNL appearance was the right thing to do. At a time like this, there are more important things to worry about than guest starring on SNL. Even if he isn't actively doing anything about the hurricane support effort, it still helps his image by cancelling.
