Obama goes door-to-door

Barack Obama spent Sunday going door to door in a small Ohio town. He spent 50 minutes walking from house to house trying to get Democrats and Independents excited about the upcoming election. Obama encouraged everyone to vote now, and take advantage of Ohio's early voting system. Obama plans to spend the next three days in Ohio, where it is a close race between him and senator McCain.

I think this type of publicity is exactly what Obama needs in the swing states. With the hard economic times, people will be looking for someone who they feel cares for them and is willing to reach out and help meet their needs. By meeting people face to face (and making sure Americans know he is doing it) it paints him as concerned for the average person. If he can continue his success in states like Ohio, he will be very hard to beat come November 4th.

If I was an undecided voter or considering not to vote I would be heavily influenced by Obama showing up on my front door. I am sure the campaign is already aware of this, but if I was Obama I would expand my range of influence by sending my wife and other well known supporters door to door. The only downside to this method is how many votes can result from this method. Unless Obama is working on this 24/7, I do not see this method affecting the state of Ohio much. When unknown local officials showed up to my door step during local elections I did not care one bit.

The door-to-door canvass method is an effective method of interpersonal communication. It is true that however many homes he can go to personally will not make a difference on how close the election is in the state of Ohio. But we are forgetting of 2 powerful things that will be direct consequences of going door-to-door: the media attention he will get for doing this, and word of mouth. When people hear about this, either through the media or through someone they know, they will get the impression that Obama is a more personable candidate who really cares about the people…and that has the potential to make a difference.

Grassroot activities have been the foundation of Obama's campaign and obviously they have proven to be successful. He is being very strategic and taking advantage of Ohio voters' ability to swing either way. By going door-to-door and presenting himself as very personable, he will squash any misconceptions still lingering that he may be an elitist and not in touch with the American people.

Senator Obama continues to put the pressure on the McCain campaign as we come closer and closer to election day. With the close battle in Ohio him going door to door shows that he does care about the little people in the nation. Him taking the offense on this state now makes you wonder what could McCain possibly do now?

I think this is a good strategy for Obama, because I really feel like he is showing that he is a genuine person. He is really working hard to get the votes from people, and also just to get people involved! He is also putting it out there on what type of person he is, and how much he is working to show people how much he cares.

This door-to-door method is a great reflection of Obama's character and what type of person he is. Obama is showing the people of Ohio that he cares about more than the campaign, he also cares about the individual people.
