McCain Falls Behind Obama

According to CNN’s poll of polls released on Friday, Obama now leads McCain by three percentage points, 47-44. With McCain still leading in battleground states like Florida (by one point), Ohio (by one point), and Missouri (by four points), Obama is working hard to close the gaps, and succeeding.

Could it have anything to do with the economy?

McCain’s history of deregulation is not looking so hot now that the government is bailing out the financial institutions, which are now said to have needed more regulation in the first place. In Florida, Senator Obama said “There's only one candidate who's called himself 'fundamentally a deregulator' when deregulation is part of the problem." After McCain’s slip ups in the media involving the “fundamentals of the economy” at the beginning of the week, he has gone back and rethought his position, now stating that more controls are needed to prevent any more bankruptcies among major financial institutions.

According to the latest Gallup polls, last Sunday McCain was leading Obama 47-45 percent. After the economic turmoil of this week, Obama took the lead with 50 to McCain’s 44 percent. Obama has put McCain on the defensive on issues regarding the economy, and that is where he is likely to stay for some time now. Prepare to hear one major theme at the debate on Friday: The Economy

McCain is definitely in a tough position. One fundamental communicative strategy is to practice preventative messaging, not reactive messaging. If McCain does take the defensive position in the debates, he will seem weak or wishy-washy. He should have had more foresight and anticipated such downfalls, then prepared a strategy to turn it into his advantage. That is why politicians do not seem to answer questions so early in the race: they are building a preventative communication strategy.

I agree with both of you. It is clear that when it comes to economic issues, Obama has an advantage over McCain. I think it has become apparent that the fact that the Bush administration has done such a poor job handling economic issues has made some indecisive voters go for Obama, only for the sake of having different economic policies. Obama is constantly calling for change and always talking about a future full of optimism. When it comes to this issue, that’s exactly what people want to hear.

Obama successfully attacks the record of the incumbent by relating to economic issues so as to call for a change. At the same time, he also cleverly attacks the record of McCain by ridiculing his weak approach to the current problems.
